42 Cases to Be Handled in Kasese High Court Criminal Session

June 17 2024: On Monday, Kasese High Court kicked off a criminal session where 42 cases are going to be handled within a month.

Of the 42 files to be handled by Hon. Justice. David S.L. Makumbi the Resident Judge of Kasese High Court; Aggravated Defilement accounts for 22 cases. This is followed by Murder with 12 cases, Aggravated Robbery with five, Rape with two cases and one file of Aggravated Trafficking in Persons.

The session started with a stakeholders' meeting where a number of issues pertaining the session were discussed.

Justice Makumbi, who chaired the meeting, encouraged all stakeholders to ensure that their communication channels are open and raise any concerns through the right channels.

He also encouraged lawyers to guide their clients through Plea Bargaining where it is evident that the accused is guilty.

Advocates representing accused persons and those from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions pledged to cooperate and ensure the smooth running of the CriminalSession in the interest of Justice.

The heads of security agencies also pledged to ensure security in the course of the criminal session.

The Resident Judge concluded by reminding the parties present that the ultimate goal of the session is not convictions or acquittals, but rather achieving the ends of justice.

The criminal session proceeded to commence with plea taking.

This is the first session to be held in Kasese following the operationalization of the High Court Circuit.
